Overview
Open Campus is an optional MyFlexLearning feature that helps schools safely manage student check-outs and check-ins during the school day.
The feature allows schools to verify that students are eligible to leave and return to campus based on school-defined permissions and scheduling. When a student meets all eligibility requirements, MyFlexLearning generates a secure verification code that designated staff members validate before the student exits or re-enters the building.
Open Campus is designed to support your school's existing procedures by providing a secure, efficient way to verify student eligibility and record student movement throughout the school day.
Why Schools Use Open Campus
Schools that allow students to leave campus during designated periods need a consistent way to verify eligibility while maintaining student accountability.
Open Campus helps schools:
- Verify that students are eligible to leave campus.
- Verify students when they return to campus.
- Record student check-outs and check-ins.
- Track which students are currently off campus.
- Support emergency accountability by identifying students who are not in the building.
- Reduce manual recordkeeping while supporting existing school procedures.
Because every school operates differently, Open Campus is designed to be flexible and configurable to support each school's policies.
How Open Campus Works
Before a student can generate a verification code, MyFlexLearning verifies that the student meets the school's eligibility requirements.
Depending on your school's implementation, this may include:
- Student permissions
- Parent authorization
- School approval
- An approved Open Campus class or scheduled Open Campus period
- The appropriate check-out or check-in time
When all requirements have been met, the student generates a temporary verification code.
A designated staff member verifies the code before the student leaves campus. When the student returns, a new verification code is generated and verified before the student re-enters the building.
Each transaction is recorded in Student Events, providing administrators with a complete history of student movement.
Common Uses
Schools use Open Campus in a variety of ways, including:
- Senior privileges
- Study halls
- Open blocks
- Scheduled free periods
- Lunch privileges
- School-approved off-campus programs
Open Campus can be configured to support your school's specific policies and operational procedures.
What Open Campus Does
Open Campus helps schools:
- Verify student eligibility before leaving campus.
- Verify student eligibility when returning.
- Generate secure verification codes.
- Display the student's photo during verification.
- Record student check-outs and check-ins.
- Track students who are currently off campus.
- Provide reporting through Student Events.
What Open Campus Does Not Do
Open Campus does not:
- Unlock building doors.
- Replace school security procedures.
- Determine your school's eligibility policies.
- Automatically approve students to leave campus.
- Replace staff supervision at building entrances or exits.
Schools remain responsible for establishing and enforcing their own Open Campus policies. MyFlexLearning verifies eligibility based on your school's configuration.
⚠️ Important
Open Campus supports your school's existing procedures—it does not replace them. Your school determines who is eligible to participate and when students may leave campus.
